Here are some of the most common questions we get from consultants considering whether or not to invest in CMC certification:

How will a CMC Designation impact my consulting career?

As the only internationally recognized certification for management consultants, the CMC designation signifies that you meet rigorous global standards for competence, ethics, and professionalism. It’s not just a credential—it’s a mark of trust and quality recognized by clients, employers, and peers across industries.

Here’s how the CMC designation can make a lasting impact on your career:

  • Exclusive Access to Government-Funded Projects
CMCs are eligible to deliver Management Advisory Services (MAS) to small and medium-sized technology businesses through a CMC-Canada initiative funded by the federal government—an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build your professional portfolio. The CMC designation also adds points to your Federal RFP bid.
  • Professional Recognition for U.S. Opportunities (TN Visa)
As a CMC, your designation may support eligibility under the TN Visa for Canadian consultants seeking to work in the United States under the Canada–U.S.–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). This opens doors for cross-border opportunities and expands your market reach.
  • Preferred Rates on Professional Liability Insurance
Through CMC-Canada’s Affinity Program with BMS Canada Risk Services, members can access exclusive discounts on comprehensive professional liability insurance—an essential safeguard for any practicing consultant.
  • Stronger Credibility and Marketability
The CMC signals your professionalism and commitment to the highest standards of practice. Whether you’re applying for jobs, submitting proposals, or engaging with prospective clients, the designation sets you apart as a trusted advisor.
  • Enhanced Knowledge of Best Practices and Ethics
Through the certification process, you’ll gain valuable insight into structured methodologies, professional standards, and ethical frameworks that go beyond what’s taught in most academic or corporate training programs.
  • Valuable Member Benefits and Career Support
As part of the CMC-Canada community, you’ll gain access to professional development opportunities, networking events, mentorship programs, advocacy initiatives, exclusive discounts, Pro-Bono program and more—supporting your career at every stage.
What is a management consultant?

Management consulting is an independent, professional advisory service assisting managers and organizations to achieve organizational purposes and objectives by solving management and business problems, identifying and seizing new opportunities, enhancing learning, and implementing changes.

Does having a CMC Designation really make a difference?

While most businesses and consulting firms do not require their management consultants to have a CMC Designation, the industry is rapidly changing in the light of public questioning of the ethics of consultants. Not only will the CMC show employers and clients that you are an experienced and knowledgeable consultant, but it will give you a competitive advantage as the CMCs become increasingly preferable to work with.

What is the CMC Designation?

The Certified Management Consultant (CMC) designation is the only credential that regulates management consultants worldwide. It is recognized in over 50 countries. The CMC Designation represents a commitment to the highest standards of consulting and adherence to the ethical practice in the profession.

What do I need to qualify for the CMC Designation?

In order to qualify for the CMC Designation, you first need to complete the requirements of one of the CMC streams. To enter a stream, you will generally need to show you are actively consulting with an up-to-date resume. Fill out our qualification form to learn whether or not you qualify for the CMC Designation!

Which stream do I qualify for?

We approve CMC candidates into certification streams based on their education and experience. You will learn which stream applies to you after you have registered an account and submitted a resume for review. Learn more about the different streams.

How much work is the CMC Designation?

Earning your CMC Designation is not an easy task, but the program structure is flexible and self-paced. Depending on the stream, you’ll take a number of courses, undergo a peer review process, and complete an oral assessment with two CMCs. The Designation typically takes anywhere from 8 to 40 hours.

What is the CMC Competency Framework?

Requirements leading to the CMC designation (such as the engagement summaries and oral examination) are based on the Certified Management Consultant Competency Profile. Learn more
