Certification Course

The Essentials of Management Consulting (EMC)

The Essentials of Management Consulting (EMC) focuses on the three core consulting competencies:

  • Assessing the client's current situation, understanding business challenges, and identifying opportunities;
  • Developing strategies for the client's growth and development; and
  • Advising on change management processes while implementing recommendations.

The course also reviews fundamentals required of a successful Certified Management Consultant (CMC), including project management, tools, and techniques for each stage of the consulting process, and an opportunity to work in small peer groups to experience a modern case study simulating a real consulting process.

Guided by one of our certified Instructors, the class begins by reviewing the overall consulting process with weeks 2 through 6 diving into each phase while learners put their skills into practice in a simulated case study exercise.

This blended course has four components:

  1. Self-paced eLearning module and independent review of the Code of Professional Conduct, CMC-Canada's Common Body of Knowledge, and a high level introduction to the main concepts covered in the course.
Learners receive access one week prior to the live session and must complete prior to the first live class.

  2. Live virtual classroom session (via Zoom).
Learners receive an invitation to the live sessions one week before the first class date.

  3. Case Study
With a team of their class peers, learners will form their own "consulting firm" and will work together on a simulated engagement that incorporates a variety of aspects of a real business case. Presentations are made to the "client" during live classes. Some class time will be available for group work; however, learners should plan to meet and work with their teams outside of class.

  4. Reflective Summary
This short activity is assigned following the final class of the course. Learners work independently to answer two main questions, relating to the course materials, their learnings in class, and how they will apply these elements to their Management Consulting practice.

Technical Requirements:
All class members must attend class using a stable internet connection, webcam, and microphone in order to adequately participate in class discussion.

FAQs

We are interested in providing this training at our firm. What options are available?
We offer options for private classes, custom scheduling, and discounted rates for groups. Please email events@cmc-canada.ca to schedule a time to discuss your needs and options.

I am not yet a member of CMC-Canada. Can I still take this course?
Yes! This class is available to all.  We do, however, encourage you to enroll as a member, which will save you money and afford you many additional advantages and discounts.  You can sign up to be a member here.
We recommend signing up as a member before enrolling in the course to ensure you receive the member price.  If you are a resident of Alberta or Saskatchewan, please send us an email to let us know you will be signing up so we can reserve your place - enrollment in these institutes requires some additional steps.

How do I request an accommodation?
We have developed our courses with a variety of learners and needs in mind and recognize that some learners may have additional specific needs.  Please email events@cmc-canada.ca or call 800-268-1148 x.208 at your earliest convenience to discuss how we can facilitate an excellent learning experience for you.

I am not able to connect a microphone and webcam. May I still attend?
We require all learners to participate in the live classes so a working camera and microphone are necessary to earn credit for completion.  You may request an exception due to a unique situation or need for accommodation, the outcome of which will be determined on a case-by-case basis.  In these cases, please email events@cmc-canada.ca at least one week prior to the live class to request an exception.

Can I earn PD points/hours for this course?
As this course is required for certification toward earning your CMC, PD points are not recorded for this class. (PD points are not required for the year you earn your designation.)

If you have already earned your CMC and are taking this class voluntarily, you may be able to apply these hours toward your annual CPD points declaration (required to maintain your CMC designation).  If this situation applies to you, please check with your Certifying Institute to confirm recognition of learning hours.

If you are looking for CPD credit/hours to apply to a different designation, please check with that association to determine eligibility. We are happy to provide any additional documentation required to facilitate that process.

I have an important client meeting during class hours. Can I miss a class and still get credit?
While we encourage attendees to be present for every class, we understand that life (and professional commitments) can sometimes get in the way. Each class is recorded and provided for all participants to review and/or to catch up on a missed class.
Please note that a maximum of one class may be missed while maintaining eligibility to complete this class for credit. Arriving more than 15 minutes late, or missing more than 15 minutes of any part of a class will result in an absence being recorded.
